A Surprise Proposal in Bordeaux (and Why Saint-Émilion Should Be on Your List Too)
There’s a certain tension that builds just before someone gets down on one knee. You can feel it in the air, even if you’re pretending to be a passing tourist with a camera. That’s how Lesley and Gulsum’s proposal began, on the steps of the Palais du Capitole inside Bordeaux’s Jardin Public.
Lesley had been in touch with me for weeks, planning it out. They were in town from England for a friend’s wedding and decided to spend a few days in Bordeaux because they love the city and, naturally, its wine. He knew it would be the perfect place to propose.
We looked at a few different options, but Jardin Public made the most sense. Characterful, central, and quiet enough to give them some space. On the day, I scouted ahead to check for building works or crowds. By chance, a big tour group left just before they arrived, and I managed to gently move on a local who’d settled on the steps with a book.
The setup was simple. Lesley asked me to take a photo on his phone, and I suggested grabbing one or two on my camera as well. That gave me the chance to guide them into position without raising suspicion. Then, mid-frame, he reached into his jacket.
The reaction was unforgettable. Gulsum was so shocked she didn’t believe it was real. She even walked away for a moment, trying to process it, before Lesley went down on one knee again. What followed was laughter, disbelief, and then the kind of happiness you can’t stage. Every frame shows it.
Afterwards we wandered into the city for a few more portraits, as the lunchtime rush was starting and Bordeaux streets, the two of them still buzzing.
For me, the best part was Gulsum’s face in those first seconds. Pure surprise, pure joy. Weddings are full of big, beautiful moments, but proposals have this unique electricity. Everything changes in an instant, and it’s addictive to witness, let alone to photograph.
Why Bordeaux Works for Proposals
Bordeaux has a balance few cities manage. Elegant architecture, riverside views, quiet courtyards. For proposals, that means you can choose between grand backdrops or something more private, depending on the mood you want.
If you want some ideas on where to propose in Bordeaux then let have a look at my blog on the subject here.
Why Saint-Émilion is Just as Good
I’m also starting to get enquiries for Saint-Émilion, and it’s easy to see why. The medieval streets, the views over the vineyards, the mix of atmosphere and intimacy — it’s a natural setting for proposals. If Bordeaux is the lively city stage, Saint-Émilion is the romantic vineyard hideaway.
How I Photograph Proposals
Every proposal is different, but I keep the process simple and discreet. We plan ahead so you’re not left worrying about logistics. I’ll scout the location, set up a cover if needed, and make sure I’m in the right place without giving anything away. Afterwards, we usually wander for a short portrait session, something to mark the day beyond the proposal itself. Within 48 hours you’ll have a set of images to relive and share.
