I’m Gavin, a British photographer based in Bordeaux. I’ve photographed many proposals and I proposed to my own wife along the river, so I’ve been on both sides of this.

Proposing is a nerve-wracking thing to do so my job is to make everything else around it as easy as possible, so all you need to think about is the moment itself.

I’ll help you find the right spot, scout it beforehand, think through how the moment will unfold, shoot the proposal discreetly, and then run a short portrait session once you’ve both had a moment to take it in. The buzz afterwards is something else.

“Gavin went completely above and beyond. He communicated brilliantly in the lead-up. Couldn’t be happier with the results.” - Noah

An engagement session in Bordeaux

How it works

Most of the people I work with don’t live in Bordeaux, so a lot of the proposal planning happens before you arrive. We talk through locations, I explain how different spots actually feel at certain times of day, and we narrow it down together so the decision feels clear rather than complicated. When it helps, I scout in advance and send short videos so you can see the space as it really is.

Once we’ve settled on a plan, I handle the details. I check the area for anything that might get in the way, keep an eye on the weather in the days before, and if anything changes, we adjust early so there’s no last-minute panic.

On the day, I arrive about 30 minutes before you so I can check on the area and do some crowd moving if need be. The proposal itself takes about half an hour from start to finish, and afterwards we spend another half an hour or so doing some relaxed portraits nearby. Nothing forced because by that point you’re both buzzing and the photos come easily.

Then I step away and you get on with your day. Find a café, open a bottle of something, enjoy being engaged. I’m not there to outstay my welcome.

“The planning, advice and messages in the lead-up made us feel very relaxed and comfortable about the day. It was even more special to us to have so much fun doing it.” - Emma and Nick

Engagement sessions

Engagement sessions are different. There’s no surprise and no pressure. You both know what’s happening, so it’s calmer, slower, and more about spending time together.

I give enough direction so you feel looked after without it ever feeling like a performance. We walk, we talk, we make some photographs. Most couples tell me afterwards they were surprised how comfortable it felt.

If you’re getting married and want to get used to being in front of a camera before the wedding, this is a good way to do it. If you just want some photos of the two of you in Bordeaux, that works too.

“Attentive, informative and easy to work with.” - Frazer

Bordeaux any time of year

Most people aren’t planning a trip just to propose. You’re already coming, you’ve got a ring, and at some point you’ve thought: this is the place. Bordeaux works for that year round. Summer and spring have longer light and warmer evenings. Autumn and winter are quieter, the city looks different, and a proposal followed by a glass of something good in a quiet wine bar fits the season perfectly. There’s no wrong time to do it.

If you’re still deciding where, here are the best places to propose in Bordeaux. My guide to planning a surprise proposal in Bordeaux covers how it all works.
